I was originally thinking of writing a simple list ranking the films, but as I moved through them, I realized that such a plain task would not do this series justice. The classic films proved that the quality of the new movies is no fluke, and that the Apes franchise deserves every bit of the fame and fortune that has come its way over the years. I was expecting an enjoyable trip through cinematic history, but what I was not expecting was having an experience of true importance, an experience that knocked me down and genuinely affected me. Over the course of a week, I sat down and watched every pre-2011 film in the franchise, starting with the 1968 original and working my way up to the 2001 Tim Burton remake. Planet of the Apes is a huge pop culture phenomenon that I have somehow managed to miss up to this point, but I resolved to change that. Let’s have a talk about Planet of the Apes and why this franchise is one of the most important in science fiction cinema…Īfter seeing Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (You, dear reader, may remember that I liked it quite a bit), I was inspired to finally get around to the rest of this storied franchise. SPOILERS for all eight Planet of the Apes films within.
